Here’s to Old Girls High!
A Noteworthy Beginning
Strolling the halls of Roosevelt Historic Lofts, you can see highlights of the original historic high school that once held classes here. The Girls’ High School was founded in 1872 in the John Neal/William Lyon Mansion, before moving to 745 Hansell St. SE in 1924. It was the first all-girl public school in Atlanta, Georgia. In this new location, the school boasted 104 rooms that served as science halls, a business department, sewing rooms, a library, and outdoor classrooms on the third level, 20 classrooms, and 39 teachers’ offices.
In 1947, high schools became co-educational. The school was renamed Roosevelt High School, after Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and continued educating Atlanta’s children until 1985, when the high school was combined with Hoke Smith Technical School and the new school moved to a new building, Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School. In the late ‘80s, Roosevelt High School was renovated into apartments, continuing its service to the people of Atlanta. Here’s to old Girls High!
